Ghana’s senior police officer turned award-winning
gospel singer, Superintendent Kofi Sarpong, has
told NEWS-ONE that his decision to become
professional gospel musician has enhanced his
police career.
“As a police officer, my work is very human-related
and not just about keeping watch and providing
security for the public.
Since I started doing gospel music, I have become
closer to the public and the more closer you get to
the public, the better you can serve them because
you relate better, they give you information in trust,
and some even start to look up to you as a role
model,” the Police Superintendent, popularly known
as DSP Kofi Sarpong, explained.
He was answering a question from NEWS-ONE as
to whether combining a professional music career
with his full-time job as a police officer had brought
him major challenges or not.
“I agree it is not easy but so far so good. I have not
encountered any major challenges. I put my police
profession ahead of my music career but I handle
both in a way that the balance has been mutually
beneficial.
“If one was hindering the other, I would have
stopped a long time ago. I am happy God has
helped me to excel in both fields. I was very
encouraged when I started winning awards and I
realised I could overcome the fears and challenges.
Mind you, I do not only serve the public when I
minister my gospel tunes.

I am also enhancing the rapport between the public
and the police.
When we have our WASSA events in the police
service, I get invited all over to perform for my
colleagues and they all love it and give me
maximum support,” Kofi Sarpong stated.
The musician said the fact that he is a popular
policeman because of his music career means he is
compelled to live an exemplary life whether he is in
uniform or not, noting that it has added up to making
him a better police officer.
Kofi Sarpong said though he has a lot of plans and
expectations for the year 2015, he will leave that
information to be put out by his manager, Ernest
Kwasi Ennin of Media Excel Productions.
The talented gospel singer burst into the music
industry in late 2009 and in 2010, grabbed the
Gospel Song of the Year at the Ghana Music
Awards. He was also nominated for the categories
of Gospel Artiste of the Year and Discovery of the
Year.
He has since launched two successful albums and
become a regular face at music concerts in Ghana
and beyond.
Kofi Sarpong was born into a family of
Presbyterians and joined the Police Service 13
years ago. He is married to Mrs Salomey Sarpong
and they have three lovely kids.

Report: Amber Rose Walked out of D’Banj’s Concert
Despite all the glamorous pictures I shared with you
earlier on D’Banj’s 10th year anniversary in
showbiz in Nigeria, it seems things did not go so
well at the event as pulse.ng reports that US model
and socialite, Amber Rose walked out of the party.
According to the report, Amber Rose and her
entourage walked out of the event after it became
obvious that the anniversary celebration party was
a poorly organized and disoriented.
The reports suggests D’banj’s performance was
uncoordinated as he often interrupted his own
performance on several occasions.
Prior to Amber Rose’s departure, Amber Rose
announced the premiere of D’banj’s new video
‘Feeling A Nigga’ remix featuring Akon which was
strangely interrupted half way by D’Banj.

‘Kpa-Kpa-Kpa’ idea was from Ayitey Powers – Guru
“The first time I heard this ‘Kpa Kpa Kpa’ thing was
when Ayitey Powers was fighting Bukom Banku,”
revealed Tema-based Hiplife artiste Guru, in a bid
to explain the inspiration behind his hit single ‘Kpa
Kpa Kpa movement’.
The man who made the phrase popular, Mohammed
Ayeetey Okwabe, has demanded a payment of GH
¢50,000 from the artiste and telecommunications
company Glo in the form of royalties for using the
now popular term for commercial purposes.
But discussing the issue on Starr Drive on Starr
103.5 FM, the ‘Kpa Kpa kpa movement’ hitmaker
revealed that his inspiration to write and sing the
song initially came from the Ghanaian boxer Ayitey
Powers’ comment on how he was going to take out
his opponent.
“You know there was some interview he did and he
was like if he catches Bukom Banku in the ring, he
would just give him ‘Kpa, Kpa, Kpa-Kpa’, you see?
So that was where I got the whole idea from first of
all.

“But later on I read somebody also came out with
an interview which was on Joy [FM] or something
so I did my research and took the shot, the
interview and fused it into the video; so it was just
like taking it to the light. This is just the raw
interview. Okay, I’m taking it into the light,” he said
on Wednesday.
However, Guru admitted he paid Mohammed a visit
with gifts in hand during the Christmas festivities.
We are pricey; event organizers must not take us for granted - Gallaxy
Under the management of Harbour City Recordz,
Afro-beat and Highlife music group, Gallaxy has
indicated that although they were billed on quite an
interesting number of shows last year; “we were
displeased with how some event organisers
handled their very own shows. In fact, everything
about their events was poorly organised.”
Adding, “We are the most expensive music group in
Ghana at the moment and a lot goes into our out
and about, hence, we will not be happy if taken for
granted.”
According to the music group, “We appreciate the
level at which we are, not because we and our
record label are new on the music scene; but for us
to be billed to perform on almost all the well-
organized and recognised events last year, it
indeed proves a good beginning to our greatness.”
The ‘Holla at me’ artistes further indicated that 2014
was an awesome year with the overwhelming
acceptance the group received from the music
community, “now music enthusiasts know Gallaxy
especially with our Highlife song, ‘Wodo nti’,
‘Bokoboko’, ‘Tweaa’ and ‘Holla at me’.”
“We are grateful to our fans and music fanatics who
heightened our chances to earning nominations in
the 2014 4syte Music Video Awards with our songs,
‘Bokoboko and the controversial ‘Tweaa’ in the
‘Discovery of the year’ and ‘Best Group Video’
categories,” the music group said.

On collaborations, Gallaxy noted that their fans and
music lovers should expect something new from
their camp indicating, “2O15 is going to be a great
year for us and we are promising all our fans to be
on the look out for more hit songs.”
Gallaxy has songs including ‘Bokoboko’, ‘Ye Mame’,
‘Wodo nti’, ‘World Cup cheer song’ and ‘Holla at me’
among others.
If there is a Dancehall King, the person will come from Jamaica - Ambolley cautions
Gyedu Blay Ambolley in an exclusive interview with
YFMGhana.com has revealed the musicians of
yesteryears contributed more to global music than
the current crop of recording artists.
The performer currently pursuing the Guinness
Book of Records to credit him the father of rap
instead of Sugarhill Gang argued;
“We did more for the music than this current
generation because we made the world know there
was Ghana that had highlife music. All the people
that came from the other side of the world knew
about Highlife but should they come now they will
meet a different sound that is not highlife, that’s the
snag between the older generation and the new
generation.”
He mentioned Samini as an artiste who wasn’t
tapping enough into the sound available to him as a
Northerner saying;
“Samini is from the North; you listen to the sounds
coming from the north, they are heavy sounds
among the Frafras, Dagombas and more and to me
I think that’s what he has to be exposing.
He can put the Dancehall on these sounds so that
when the Jamaican hears a Samini song, he will
know this is a different Dancehall. This is what we
should be tapping into instead of copying.”
He revealed acts including Bisa KDei and Obrafour
were on track but cautioned titles including
Dancehall King was unnecessary.
“Bisa KDei is doing well, Obrafour also started very
well, but the younger ones get fascinated by what’s
happening on TV and think that’s the best way to
go. Now, artistes sit in Ghana and call themselves
Dancehall Kings and things like that even though we
know if there is a Dancehall King, the person will
come from Jamaica. Are you a king more than the
people who originated it? It can’t be. There’s more
to be done than what we are seeing now.”
